About the dam.
Bloemhof Dam is situated in the Vaalriver system and gets its water from the Vet River. This dam is one of the more packed dams throughout the year. During the colder months Yellow Fish are found in abundance in the dam providing anglers the opportunity to catch a whole lot of them. During the rainy season the water is quite murky and has a definite impact on the fishing.
Bloemhof Dam was originally known as the Oppermansdrif Dam is on the border of the Northwest and Free State. The dam first opened in 1970. Bloemhof Dam is 4,270 m in length a a capacity of 1,269,000,000 cubic meters and a surface area of 223 square kilometers. The dam wall stands at a height of 33m.
At the Sandveld Nature Reserve there is ample camping space as well as a Caravan Park with clean bathrooms and toilettes. There is also a wide selection of game available at this Reserve for the whole family to enjoy.

Bloemhof dam is 4,270m lank, het 'n kapasiteit van 1,269,000,000 kubieke meter en 'n oppervlak van 223 vierkante kilometer. Die dam wal staan 33m hoog.
By die Sandveldnatuurreservaat is kampgeriewe en ‘n woonwapark met ablusie geriewe. Daar is ook ‘n groot verskeidenheid wild wat by hierdie reservaat gesien kan word.
Bloemhof Dam Fishing Tips, Spots & Fishing Bait.
Carp Bait: Mealie (maize) pips, Sweetcorn, Earthworms, white Dough, Brownbread with Honey, Floaties, Mallows and Boilies.
Flavors: Almond, Aniseed, Bunspice, Banjo, Liquid Betaine, Custard, FX (Caramel), Hemp Seed Extract, Honey, Kiana, Rose, Sweetcorn, Tigernut Extract Plus as well as stronger flavors such as Eucalyptus and Garlic.
Groundbait: Plain mieliebom of your choosing such as Popcorn, Tigernut groundbait or Hemp & Tigernut Method Mix or if you want a groundbait for bigger carp you can use a pre-cooked particle mix of hemp seed, kaboem and tiger nuts.
Yellow Fish Bait: Crabs the same size or slightly bigger than our R5.00 coin, Crickets and Fruit Torre.
Smallmouth Yellow Fish Bait: Use carp bait.
Barbel / Catfish Bait: Fish heads, Day-old Chickens and Platannas.

Fishing Tips: The main feed to use in Bloemhof Dam is maize. In summer months re-feed after every fish that you have caught. There is plenty fish and they normally keep you more than busy, thus it is advisable that you take your rods out of the water when you want to eat or drink something, otherwise you might not get the chance.
Pop-Ups and Boilies between 10mm - 14mm works well. Try a sweetcorn flavor or play around a bit and see what happens. If you are using your classic flavors then try Bunspice and Banjo with FX. Kiana also works well.
The better fishing spots are more towards the 'bride' but the bigger fish are further away. If you fishing on the nature reserve side, try for the spot about 300m from the bridge.

Visvang Tips: Die bekendste voer wat hengelaars gebruik by Bloemhof is mielies. Vul die voer op na elke vis wat gevang word, veral tydens die somer maande. Daar is baie vis; as jy iets wil eet of drink moet jy stokke uithaal anders kan jy normaalweg maar vergeet om iets te drinke of ete te kry.
Boilies tussen 10mm - 14mm werk ook baie goed. Probeer 'n mielie geur of speel bietjie rond met die geure, dalk kry jy net 'n wenner. As jy normale geure gebruik dan kan jy gerus kyk na Bunspice en Banjo met FX, 'n gunsteling geur by die dam.
Die beter hengel plekke is meer na die 'bruid' se kant toe maar die groot karp is verder weg. As jy an die natuur reservaat se kant hengel probeer dan vir die area so 300m van die brug af.
